GCPBA RiverNews 8/20/12 - Steady Flow Transition to Begin August 29, 2012
A steady flow regime will be instituted on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon beginning on Sept. 1, 2012 and running through October, 2012.
At the beginning of the day on August 29, 2011, and through the end of the day on August 31, 2012, releases from Glen Canyon Dam will be made in accordance with a published schedule which maybe downloaded at: http://gcpba.org/2012/08/20/gcpba-rivernews-82012-steady-flow-transition-to-begin-august-29-2012/
This schedule details a flow transition from the daily release regime during the month of August 2012 to a steady release regime for a steady flow experiment which will begin on September 1, 2012.
During the months of September and October 2012, releases from Glen Canyon Dam will be held steady as a part of the steady flow experiment described in the Final Environmental Assessment for Experimental Releases from Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona, 2008 through 2012 (EA). The steady release target for 2012 is 8,000 cfs.
This notification is to confirm that the release volume from Glen Canyon Dam for September 2012 will be 476,000 acre-feet. Hourly and daily average releases from Glen Canyon Dam for September 2012 will be steady with no fluctuations for power generation. However, as described in the EA, releases may fluctuate +/-1,100 cfs within each hour, if necessary, for power system regulation. The hourly average releases should be maintained very close to the steady flow target of 8,000 cfs. Spinning reserves will also be available if needed for emergency response purposes.
It is anticipated that the release volume for October 2012 will be 491,000 acre-feet and that releases will also be steady at 8,000 cfs as a continuation of the steady flow experiment. This will be confirmed with a subsequent notification toward the end of September.
This notification supersedes all previously issued notifications and is current until a new notification is issued. All times identified in this notification are local time (Mountain Standard Time) and not hour ending.
